SMUD

WILLIAMS + PADDON HAS BEEN DESIGNING SUSTAINABLE ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDINGS FOR OUR CLIENTS LONG BEFORE IT BECAME TRENDY.

SMUD Customer Service Center, despite being designed in 1991, 9 years prior to the creation of the USGBC LEED™ rating system, has achieved the highest rating of LEED Platinum Certification EB; only the fifth building in California to do so as an existing building.

The SMUD Customer Service Center joins 10 other buildings in California to achieve a LEED Platinum certification. For Williams + Paddon this is a tremendous acknowledgement of our sustainable design expertise. It is also confirmation of our commitment to sustainable leadership and the incorporation of green design not just as good business practice, but because it’s simply the right thing to do.

“Every building we have designed since SMUD has benefited from what we learned,” according to Jack Paddon, President of Williams + Paddon. “Sustainable design has become an integral part of our corporate culture and we are always looking for ways to incorporate green design into each of our projects.”

The success of the project started with an enlightened client who required a life cycle analysis approach to all our design decision making. The building has features that are still considered innovative 15+ years later like operable windows, under floor air delivery, chilled water, thermal energy storage, direct indirect lighting, and daylighting. The building has also proven to be very adaptive to changing user needs as well as provide a very high factor of user comfort and control.

Since SMUD, Williams + Paddon has strengthened our commitment to sustainable design. Nine members of our firm are now LEED™ accredited, and in each of our projects we strive to incorporate green materials, passive and active energy systems, and construction methods designed to preserve precious resources. Most recently, the Placer County Community Development Resource Center which was completed in September of 2006, received both a Savings By Design award and an AIA CVC design award.
