Positioned within view of the outer slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater, it is accessible by foot and vehicle. The clinic site is in a peaceful and quiet setting, an environment conducive to healing and surrounded by unsurpassed natural beauty.
The rapid growth in the District of Karatu, coupled with a mounting healthcare crisis on the continent, has made it virtually impossible for doctors to keep pace with the ever-increasing medical needs of the community. This facility has been built to help bridge the gap between an under-resourced healthcare system and first-world medicine. Many children are
exposed to life threatening diseases in a country where the average life expectancy
is less than 43 years and there is less than one doctor for every 25,000 people. Many citizens suffer from curable diseases that remain untreated. Many people also die unnecessarily from serious injuries and/or subsequent infection due to a lack of local emergency services.
Modesto doctor Frank Artress and his wife Susan Gustafsen permenantly relocated to Tanzania from Modesto after Dr. Frank nearly died while climbing Kilimanjaro. Upon learning of the significant shortage of medical professionals in the region he sold everything and has dedicated his life to healing the people of Tanzania. For more information, images and video of Dr. Frank's efforts please visit "Africa Calling" on the San Francisco Chronical website.
